Pythagoras and Numbers: What We Really Know (and What Numerology Attributes to Him)

The History Behind the Legend

3 minutes·6 octobre 2026

Key takeaways

• Pythagoras (6th century BCE) left no writings. What we know comes from later sources, often mixed with legend.

• The Pythagoreans gave numbers a central philosophical role: the tetractys, musical ratios, the odd/even distinction.

• Modern numerology (letter charts, life path) doesn't come from Pythagoras: it took shape in the early 20th century and claimed him as a patron.

• The "Pythagorean theorem" was known long before him, notably in Babylon.

What We Know About Pythagoras

Born on Samos in the Aegean around the 6th century BCE, Pythagoras settled in Croton, in southern Italy, where he founded a community that was at once philosophical, religious and political. The main problem is documentary: he wrote nothing, and most accounts of his life date from centuries after his death. The earliest sources, such as Philolaus of Croton (5th century BCE), are more restrained; later sources add miraculous tales.

So it's often impossible to separate what belongs to Pythagoras himself from what belongs to his followers, the Pythagoreans.

Pythagorean Ideas About Numbers

"All Is Number"

Aristotle, reporting Pythagorean doctrines in the 4th century BCE, attributes to them the idea that numbers are the principle of all things. It's a philosophical thesis about the structure of the world, not a method of prediction.

The Tetractys

The Pythagoreans revered the tetractys, a triangle of ten dots in four rows (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10). The number 10 appears as a perfect number that contains all the others in seed form.

Musical Harmony

The Pythagoreans showed that consonant musical intervals correspond to simple ratios of string lengths: the octave (2:1), the fifth (3:2) and the fourth (4:3). This discovery, one of the first mathematical laws of nature, strongly fed the idea of a world ordered by numbers. The story that Pythagoras discovered it by hearing blacksmiths' hammers is a legend, and physically inaccurate.

Odd and Even

The Pythagoreans developed a theory of odd and even numbers, represented as dot figures. They also attached symbolic qualities to numbers, which brings them close to numerology in spirit, though not in method.

The Theorem… Known Before Pythagoras

The relationship between the sides of a right triangle (a² + b² = c²) was known well before him. The Babylonian tablet Plimpton 322, dated to around 1800 BCE, contains lists of triples matching this relationship. Crediting the theorem to Pythagoras is mainly a Greek tradition; we don't even know whether he or his followers proved it.

And "Pythagorean" Numerology?

The chart assigning 1 to 9 to the letters of the Latin alphabet, life path calculations and master numbers appear in no ancient source. Modern numerology took shape around the turn of the 20th century, particularly in the United States, with authors such as L. Dow Balliett, who explicitly claimed Pythagoras as an inspiration. The name "Pythagorean" is therefore a tribute, not a historical lineage. See Pythagorean vs Chaldean.

Why It Matters

Knowing that today's numerology is a modern construction doesn't make it useless, but it invites us to read it for what it is: a recent symbolic tradition inspired by an ancient intuition, that of a world where numbers carry meaning.

Frequently asked questions

Did Pythagoras invent numerology?

No. The Pythagoreans gave numbers philosophical and symbolic value, but name-and-date numerology is a modern creation.

What is the tetractys?

A triangle of ten dots (1 + 2 + 3 + 4), the Pythagorean symbol of the perfection of the number 10.

Did Pythagoras discover the Pythagorean theorem?

The relationship was known in Babylon more than a thousand years earlier.
