The Number 40: Quarantine, the Flood, Lent, Why Does This Number Keep Coming Back?
A Time of Trial and Transformation
Key takeaways
• The word quarantine comes from the Venetian Italian quaranta giorni, "forty days," the isolation period imposed on ships during plague epidemics.
• In the Bible, 40 marks times of trial: 40 days of rain in the Flood, 40 years in the desert, Jesus's 40-day fast.
• In numerology, 40 reduces to 4, the number of building, with a zero that tradition reads as amplifying it.
Where the Word Quarantine Comes From
In 1377, the Republic of Ragusa (today's Dubrovnik, Croatia) required travelers from plague-hit areas to wait 30 days before entering the city: the trentino. Venice later extended this to 40 days, the quarantena, which gave us the word "quarantine" in many languages.
The choice of 40 likely had a symbolic dimension, echoing the biblical 40 days. It also worked in practice: the period was long enough for the sick to show symptoms before disembarking.
40 in Religious Traditions
• The Flood: 40 days and 40 nights of rain.
• The Exodus: 40 years wandering in the desert for the Hebrew people.
• Moses stays 40 days on Mount Sinai.
• Jesus fasts 40 days in the desert, which gave rise to the 40 days of Lent.
• In Islamic tradition, Muhammad receives his first revelation around age 40, and several cultures mark the end of a mourning period on the 40th day.
In these stories, 40 rarely means an exact duration: it signals a long, complete period, a trial that transforms.
40 Elsewhere
• Pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks counted from the first day of the last menstrual period.
• The tale Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.
• A curiosity: −40 °C is exactly −40 °F, the only point where the two scales meet.
40 in Numerology
In numerology, 40 reduces to 4 (4 + 0). Tradition reads it as the building, patience and effort of 4, amplified by the zero. The idea strikingly echoes the religious symbolism of 40: a long time of work and trial that lays a solid foundation.
