Numerology FAQ: 20 Questions, Clear Answers
20 Questions, Clear Answers
The Basics
What is numerology?
Numerology is a symbolic tradition that gives meaning to numbers calculated from a birth date and a name. It's used as a tool for personal reflection. It isn't a science.
Where does numerology come from?
It's often credited to Pythagoras, but modern numerology, with its date and name calculations, took shape in the early 20th century, particularly in the United States. The link to Pythagoras is mostly retrospective.
Is numerology accurate?
No scientific study has shown a link between a person's numbers and their personality or future. The sense of accuracy is partly explained by the Barnum effect, described by psychologist Bertram Forer in 1949. Its value is reflective, not predictive.
What's the difference between numerology and astrology?
Astrology relies on the positions of celestial bodies at birth (date, time, place); numerology, on calculations from your date and name. They share some symbolic links, such as the number-planet pairings proposed by Cheiro.
Calculations
How do I calculate my life path number?
Reduce your birth day, month and year separately, add them, then reduce to a digit from 1 to 9, or 11, 22, 33. Details: life path number.
Why do two sites give different results?
Because there are several methods: reducing by components or adding every digit, Pythagorean or Chaldean chart, how Y is treated. The final digit from 1 to 9 is often the same, but master numbers and karmic debts can differ.
Should I use my birth name or the name I use now?
Your full birth name, including all middle names, is the reference. Your current name can be calculated as a complement.
Does my time of birth matter?
No. It matters in astrology, not numerology.
Is Y a vowel or a consonant?
It depends on the school. If your name has a Y, calculate both versions. See soul urge number.
The Numbers
Which number is most important?
The life path is generally considered the central number, complemented by the expression and soul urge numbers.
What are master numbers?
The numbers 11, 22 and 33, which most numerologists don't reduce. See master numbers.
Is having a master number better?
No. Tradition describes it as more intense, with more potential and more pressure, not as superior.
What is a karmic debt?
One of the numbers 13, 14, 16 or 19 appearing in a calculation before reduction. Tradition sees it as a lesson to integrate. See karmic debt numbers.
Is a karmic debt serious?
No. It's a personal-growth theme, and whether it appears often depends on the calculation method.
What is a karmic lesson?
A digit from 1 to 9 missing from the letters of your birth name. See karmic lessons.
Cycles
What is a personal year?
A number that changes every year and describes, according to numerology, the tone of a period within a 9-year cycle. See personal year.
What is the universal year 2027?
2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11: a master universal year, associated with intuition and inspiration.
Can my life path change?
No. It depends only on your birth date. The cycles are what change.
Using Numerology
Can numerology tell whether a relationship will last?
No. No compatibility chart has demonstrated predictive value. It can help you talk about your needs. See life path compatibility.
Should I make decisions based on numerology?
No. Important decisions should rest on concrete facts. Numerology can help you ask questions, not answer them for you.
