Tropical vs sidereal zodiac: why your sign can change
Aries in Western astrology but Pisces in Vedic astrology? Neither system is wrong.
Aries in Western astrology but Pisces in Vedic astrology? Neither is wrong — they simply use different zodiacs.
Two ways to measure the zodiac
The tropical zodiac: based on the seasons
Western astrology starts at the spring equinox, when the Sun enters 0° Aries. The twelve signs are 30° slices of the seasonal cycle, tied to Earth's relationship with the Sun.
The sidereal zodiac: based on the stars
Vedic astrology, or jyotish, anchors signs to the fixed stars. Sidereal Aries matches the part of the sky where the constellation actually sits.
Precession of the equinoxes
Earth's axis wobbles slowly. The equinox point slips back against the stars by about 1° every 72 years. The zodiacs aligned 2,000 years ago; today the ayanamsa is about 24°, nearly a full sign.
Which one is right?
Most people move back one sign in sidereal, unless they were born in the last degrees of a tropical sign.
Both are consistent systems. Tropical dominates Western psychological astrology; sidereal is central to Indian astrology. Do not mix one system's interpretations with the other's calculations. Both can be calculated precisely with Swiss Ephemeris.
Frequently asked questions
What about Ophiuchus, the 13th sign?
It belongs to the astronomy of constellations, not to tropical or sidereal astrological zodiacs, which both have twelve signs.
Did precession change my sign?
Not in tropical astrology: its zodiac stays fixed to the seasons.
