Astrology: the sky chart that mirrors you
From Babylonian ziggurats to modern apps, astrology is humanity's oldest attempt to read destiny in the stars.
What is astrology?
Astrology is the study of the relationships between celestial bodies — Sun, Moon, planets — and human events. It postulates that the sky's configuration at the moment of birth draws a unique map: the natal chart. This chart reveals personality, deep tendencies, life cycles and learning domains.
Astrology does not predict the future mechanically. In its most refined form, it offers a symbolic language to understand the energies at work in a life — the resources, the tensions, the moments ripe for action or contemplation.
"The stars incline, they do not determine." — Classical astrological adage, taken up by Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century.
Origins: 5,000 years of sky-watching
No other divinatory discipline has a history as long and as documented as astrology. It was born from the systematic observation of the sky, long before writing.
-3000
Mesopotamia — the first observations
Babylonian priest-astronomers observed planetary movements from the top of ziggurats. They interpreted eclipses, the positions of Venus and comets as omens for kings and nations — this was 'mundane', collective astrology.
-700
Babylon — the birth of the zodiac
The Babylonians cut the ecliptic into 12 equal 30° sectors and gave each one the name of a constellation. The zodiac as we know it was born. The first individual horoscopes appear around -410.
-300
Greece — the philosophical synthesis
The Greeks absorbed Babylonian astronomy and added their philosophical framework. Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos (~150 AD), the founding work of Western astrology. The idea of harmony between macrocosm and microcosm took hold.
8th century
The Arab golden age
Arab astronomers translated, commented on and enriched Greek texts. They refined predictive techniques and introduced solar returns (annual charts). Baghdad became the global hub of scholarly astrology.
16th century
Europe — astrology at royal courts
Nostradamus, Tycho Brahe and Kepler himself practised astrology. It was taught in universities alongside medicine. Catherine de' Medici consulted her astrologer on matters of state.
20th century
The psychological renaissance
Carl Gustav Jung took an interest in astrology as a tool for knowledge of the unconscious. Dane Rudhyar founded 'humanistic' astrology in the 1930s: a planet is no longer a fate but a potential to actualise.
Today
The digital era — exploding demand
The hashtag #astrology counts billions of views on TikTok. Natal-chart apps have tens of millions of users. Gen Z is the greatest consumer of astrology in history.
How does it work?
A natal chart is a photograph of the sky at the precise instant of birth. It is composed of three great families of elements: the planets (the actors), the signs (the way of acting), and the houses (the life domains).

A note on the richness of the natal chart
Beyond the Sun sign — which everyone knows — a full natal chart integrates the positions of every planet, the aspects (angles between planets), the Ascendant (the sign rising on the horizon at birth), and the configuration of the houses. It is this global reading that gives astrological analysis its richness and precision.
Western, Vedic, Chinese astrology — what's the difference?
Western (tropical) astrology
Heir to Ptolemy, it uses the tropical zodiac — based on the seasons, not on the actual constellations. Aries always begins at the spring equinox. It is the most widespread system in Europe and the Americas.
Vedic astrology (Jyotisha)
Born in India more than 5,000 years ago, it uses the sidereal zodiac — based on the actual positions of the constellations. It places enormous importance on the Moon and on the 27 lunar mansions (nakshatras). Widely practised in South Asia, it is enjoying a global revival.
Chinese astrology
Radically different: it rests on a 12-year cycle, each year associated with an animal (Rat, Ox, Tiger…). It integrates the 5 elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and is intimately tied to the lunar calendar. It focuses more on collective cycles than on the individual chart.
Does it work? The question of validity
What science says
Astrology is not recognised as a science. Controlled studies show no significant correlation between Sun sign and personality as measured by validated tests. Michel Gauquelin's work on the 'Mars effect' and athletes, however fascinating, has not been replicated conclusively.
Important nuance
In 1985 physicist Shawn Carlson published a double-blind study in Nature: professional astrologers could not match natal charts to psychological profiles better than chance. This result is often cited. It tests one precise form of astrology — not the discipline as a whole — but remains a real limit not to ignore.
What millions of practitioners experience
For most of its users, astrology is not a predictive science — it is a tool for symbolic reflection. The natal chart works like a mirror: it offers a vocabulary to name tendencies, inner tensions, cycles. Many psychologists and therapists use it as a projective tool, much like Jungian archetypes or typology tests.
The question may not be 'is it true?' but 'is it useful?' — and for millions of people, the answer is yes.
Fun facts — astrology in every state
Fun fact
Ronald Reagan governed by the stars
Astrologer Joan Quigley unofficially guided Reagan's schedule throughout his presidency (1981-1989). Trips, speeches and key decisions were planned around planetary transits.
Fun fact
Co-Star: 35 million users
Launched in 2017, the Co-Star astro app has been downloaded more than 35 million times. In 2019 it generated more downloads than any wellness app in the United States.
Fun fact
Kepler was an astrologer
Johannes Kepler, father of the laws of planetary motion, practised and defended astrology. He drew horoscopes — including one for General Wallenstein — to fund his astronomical research.
Fun fact
Farmers and the Moon
The agricultural lunar calendar — planting, pruning or harvesting by the Moon — is still followed by thousands of farmers in Europe. Some organic winegrowers apply it systematically.
Fun fact
Sign as a dating criterion
In a YouGov poll (2022), 34% of Americans say they have avoided a relationship because of astrological incompatibility. In Japan, asking someone's sign on a date is as common as asking their job.
Fun fact
Newton believed in astrology
When Edmond Halley mocked astrology in front of Newton, he reportedly replied: 'I, sir, have studied the matter — which you have not.'
Why order a personalised natal chart?
A magazine horoscope — based only on the Sun sign — represents only one tenth of your natal chart. A personalised report analyses your full configuration: Ascendant, Moon, personal planets, dominant houses, major aspects, and the transits and progressions that define your current cycles.
Many people who claim to be 'nothing like' their Sun sign discover, on reading their full chart, an accuracy that leaves them speechless — because they finally recognise themselves in their Moon, their Ascendant, or their dominant stellium.
